  1. Present Suffering – Future GloryRomans 8:17,18 • "Both prisoners and jailers asked many questions, and we had a more fruitful ministry there than we could have expected in church. God was better served by our presence in prison than if we had been free." Pastor Cristo Kuleczef • November 10 - International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

  2. 1. The Reality of Present Suffering • Mark 13:13 (NIV) - All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. • General suffering: result of the broken world we live in • Matthew 5:10 (NIV) - Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. • Suffering for righteousness: result of persecution because of our faith in Christ

  3. Ephesians 6:12 (NLT) - For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. • Suffering for righteousness & living as a disciple of Jesus go hand in hand. • Jesus was all about sacrifice. • God’s very nature is sacrificial love

  4. Romans 8:16–17 (NIV) 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. • Benefits of being a child of God: there is an inheritance waiting for us • BUT - as God’s children we also share in Christ’s suffering.

  5. Indeed, there can be no discipleship without persecution; to follow Christ is to join Him in a cross-carrying journey of reconciling the world to the Father. A cross-centered gospel requires a cross-carrying messenger. Glen Penner • The central message of the gospel is that Christ suffered and died and rose again from the dead. • Matthew 16:24 (NIV) “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

  6. What are you willing to sacrifice for the sake of your Saviour? • Challenge: Are you ready to fully devote yourself to Jesus Christ by giving him unconditional obedience no matter what the cost? • Denying self = obedience to God

  7. Jesus is with us because he has taken that path of suffering himself and we can know with confidence that we are not alone in our suffering. • The sufferings of the righteous point to God’s grace at work in their lives. • 1 Peter 5:10–11 (NIV) - And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever.

  8. 2. The Reward of Future Glory • Jesus prepared the way for our future glory: • Hebrews 2:9 (NIV) But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. • Christ’s resurrection and ascension into heaven guarantees our future inheritance

  9. 2 Corinthians 4:16–17 (NIV) 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. • 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV) - And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

  10. Philippians 3:20,21 (NIV) 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

  11. We do not face the same persecution as other Christians around the world. • We ARE in the same spiritual battle. • Satan is out to destroy the body of Christ. • We need to resist him: • Stand firm in our faith • Worship together in unity • Care for and edify one another
