I recently have been studying the works of Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell. He has done revolutionary work to treat Hysteria in women, amongst other ailments. . His theory is that if you cure the body, the mind must follow. He calls it the Rest Cure.

My Wife’s behavior has become erratic. She has become prone to nervous breakdown…
Since I encouraged her writing with sincerity, I fear I am partially responsible for her delusions. I must make this right.
I have decided to apply Dr. Weir’s “Rest Cure.” I have also forbidden any writing.
I know she still writes, though. I find the papers. She sees things in our wallpaper pattern. But the wallpaper is mostly plain.
Her writing is often incoherent, and more often inconsistent with reality.
Mitchell insists the patient will make progress, using this method.
