Albrecht Durer Northern Europe took a long time to recover from the Black plague Renaissance ideas slowly spread to Spain, Germany, & England German artist Albrecht Durer traveled to Italy to Study Italian art He returned to Germany and is credited with spreading Renaissance ideas throughout the country Called the German Leonardo
Desiderius Erasmus- Dutch Humanist • Priest who produced a new translation of the Bible in everyday language (vernacular) • Gradually became more and more shocked by Church corruption • Believed that Christianity should be about living the life modeled by Christ • Did not believe that Christianity should be formal, elaborate ceremonies and laws dictated by the Pope
Thomas MoreEnglish politician & author • Friend of Erasmus • Trained as a lawyer • Worked in the government of English King Henry VIII • In 1516, he wrote Utopia which means “nowhere” • An ideal society on an island • Everyone was educated in Greco-Roman classics • Each adult devoted a portion of his/her day in manual labor, business pursuits, and intellectual pursuits More proposed socialism because he believed that the basic problems of society were caused by greed

The Printing Revolution • 1456, Johann Gutenberg of Germany printed the first complete addition of the Bible using movable metal type on a new machine called the printing press • Printed books were cheaper and easier to produce than hand-copied books • Increased literacy throughout Europe • Significantly increased education throughout the continent
