Dailey Cerebral Exercise: 3/19/14 • What three things defines cultural diversity? • Differentiate between race and ethnicity. • What are the four characteristics of culture? • Differentiate between cultural assimilation and acculturation. • Why is it important for HC professionals to be sensitive to cultural diversity?
TO: How do we prevent prejudice and understand other cultures? • Biasdef: preference that inhibits impartial judgment. • Ethnocentric – believe in supremacy of their own ethnic group. • Prejudicedef: strong feeling about a person that is formed s/out reviewing facts. • Stereotypingdef: assumption @ each in a particular group.
Ways to avoid b, p, & s: pick 5 • Know your own personal values & beliefs • Obtain information @ other cultures • Be sensitive to behaviors different from your own • Respect other beliefs • Develop friendships c other cultural groups • Ask questions about others beliefs • Evaluate all info before forming an opinion • Be open to differences • Avoid jokes that may offend • Apologize if you hurt another person • Forgive if another person hurts uou
How does this affect HC professionals? • Cultural/ethnic beliefs of an individual will affect the behavior of an individual. • Sooo, HC providers must be aware of these beliefs in order to provide…. • Holistic Care – care that provides well-being of the whole person (social, emo, mental)
Areas of Cultural Diversity: • Family Organization • Nuclear Family vs. Extended Family • Patriarchal Family vs. Matriarchal Families • Language • Translators • Speak slowly, simple words, use gestures • Most states require that medical permits require a written signature be printed in the pt’s language to ensure that the pt understands • Personal Space • Distance people need in order to feel comfortable • Eye Contact
Closure: Self-reflection How do you perceive the areas of cultural diversity? Is your family patri-/matriarchal? Do you speak fluent English, or would you ever consider being a translator? How far is your personal space? How do you feel about eye contact during communication? Be sure to address each, we will call roster numbers.
