  1. DNA

  2. Nucleic Acids • Function/job: Store important Information in the cell • Made of: nucleotides • Examples: DNA and RNA

  3. Nucleic Acid Structure • A nucleotide is made of 3 components: • Phosphate • sugar • nitrogen base

  4. DNA • Contains information needed for cell activity and cell division • Contains all genetic information • DNA – Deoxyribonucleic Acid

  5. DNA • Structure, It contains • Sugar Phosphate Backbone (deoxyribose) • Nitrogen containing bases (four possible) • Double Stranded

  6. DNA • Double Helix, with base pairing in the center.

  7. DNA • Four Possible Nitrogen Ring bases • ADENINE – A • GUANINE– G • CYTOSINE – C • THYMINE – T Know that: A goes with T G goes with C

  8. The bases are in the inside of the ladder structure they are like the rungs of the ladder. The order of base pairs gives organisms their unique traits DNA Base Pairing

  9. A bonds with T C bonds with G It is estimated that there are over 3 billion base pairs in humans DNA

  10. Structure of DNA

  11. Complimentary Strand of DNA DNA Strand #1 Double Helix Strand of DNA. –WRITE THE CODE FOR THE COMPLIMENTARY STRAND Dots = Hydrogen bonds
