  1. Point 1: Cultivation theory says that over time the media desensitizes its audience due to repeated use of violence. Media example: Many video games are now concentrated on violence like call of duty and battlefield. Explanation: this shows that the media relies heavily on conflict because people find it so entertaining as the things in video games are things you wouldn't’t or couldn't’t do in day to day life. Meaning violence sells. Point 2: Moral panic is used to exaggerate certain stories and make things seem more violent and dangerous then they are. Media example: The mods and rockers during the 50’s were shown as very violent and unruly whereas Stanley Cohen said himself that the fighting and conflict wasn’t as extravagant as the media showed it to be. Explanation: The media does this because this makes stories more compelling and entertaining and without exaggeration the audience may ignore it. Also helps certain products reach wider audiences as something seen as dull to someone else can be made to interest them. Why does the media rely so heavily on conflict? You may refer to other media texts to support your answers Point 3: More negative stories get people talking Media example: London riots became the only people talked about. Explanation: More negative stories become more popular as people talk more about shocking stories, rather then something funny or more serious. This is why institutions use the idea of moral panic to make stories or pieces of media more popular then at first. Point 3: the media thinks that the audience may be affected by the conflict but maybe the audience enjoy the conflict as they find it more entertaining. Media example: Bandura and bobo dull, experiment to show how people copy certain things in the media. Whereas maybe they just attacked the dull because its more entertaining then trying to talk to it or interact with it another way. Explanation: This shows that the audience the media is trying to reach to is more active then passive and this sells because they find it more entertaining.
