  2. Foreign Aid • Lend-Lease (1940’s): US gave $50 billion in food, munitions, & supplies to allies in WWII • Marshall Plan • After WWII, US gave $12.5 billion to 16 nations in Western Europe

  4. Security Alliances • NATO (1949) North Atlantic Treaty Organization • Collective defense of Western Europe • Mid 2003: campaign against Iraq

Security Alliances • Other Alliances • RIO Pact (1947): security alliance that is a restatement of the Monroe Doctrine • ANZUS Pact (1951): US, New Zealand, Australia promote collective security in Pacific • Japanese Pact (1951): In exchange for military protection, the US can build bases in Japan Rio pact members in dark blue, nations that left in cyan
