The Three Gorges DamProject andThe Snake River The Three Gorges, Yangtze River Swan Falls Dam, Snake River By: Malerie Romero Kyle Parker Brandon Passmore
Thesis: Built for navigation, flood control, irrigation and hydroelectricity, the dams along the Snake River provide salient examples of possible environmental impacts that face the newly built Three Gorges Dam along the Yangtze River in China. Constructed for similar purposes the massive dam is the largest hydroelectric project in the world.
The Snake River • - Begins in mountains of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming • - Flows through Idaho, Oregon, and Washington • - Flows into the Columbia River near Tri-Cities, WA
Dams • 15 in total • 4 major dams focus of environmental research • Ice Harbor, Little Monumental, Little Goose, and Lower Granite • Purposes • Hydroelectricity, Flood control, Irrigation, Navigation
Environmental Concerns • Salmon migration • Proposed breaching of dams to help salmon population • Sediment buildup • Agricultural runoff
The Three Gorges • 1912 Proposed by Sun Yet San • 1994 beginning of construction on Three Gorges Dam • Estimated cost of roughly $25 billion • Designed to: • Control flooding • Produce hydroelectricity • Provide irrigation water • Allow navigation along the Yangtze
Yangtze River • 3,900 miles long. Flows from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea • Third Largest River in the World • Runs through 25% of China’s Farmland • 70% of inland water transportation • 1/3 of population lives along Yangtze River
Impacts during construction • - Resettlement of large number of people • - Environmental problems • - Erosion and water pollution • - Disruption of river ecosystem • - Waste dumped in river
Comparisons • - Similar purposes for building dams • - Major construction projects costing governments large amounts of money • - Environmental concerns • - Siltation • - Ecology/Impacts on fish species • - Agricultural runoff • - Erosion • - The Snake River Dams as an example of the impacts the Three Gorges May have
