Social Reporting WAAPAC Conference (Day 1)
Outline • General Atmosphere • Opening Ceremony (Speeches) • Presentations • Interactions • Lessons Learnt • Motivation to Come Back
I. General Atmosphere • Cordial atmosphere, interactive and relaxed. • Great learning experience. Avenue for exposure and comparing PACs • People were using platform to discuss individual country practices/challenges • Late start in the morning which affected timing throughout the day.
I. General Atmosphere • PowerPoint presentation handouts should have been made available • There was a great feeling of leadership responsibilities during the session • Positive impression of relatively young participants with brilliant contributions. • Structure of the conference was not too clear in the beginning. It was later clearer that it was about sharing ideas in an informal way.
I. General Atmosphere • Group work was not too clear in the beginning • Communication gap between WAAPAC executives and facilitators • There should have been a Q&A session per country to find out what is happening in each country.
II. Opening Ceremony (Speeches) • Impression that the Gambian PAC was being controlled by the executive • Leader of Majority was absent and his name card should have been removed from high table • In view of the late start of the opening session the MC spoke too long • PAC Gambia Chairman should have played a more prominent role as host committee.
III. Presentation • Presentation by Professor Stapenhurst was helpful but prior hard copies of the presentation would have made it more interesting. • Prior information should have been given about the use of laptops at conference for accessing the presentations.
IV. Interactions • Some countries had strong and entrenched opinions based on what pertains in their countries • Some individual contributions turned into presentations • Some contributions became emotional
V. Lessons Learnt • For SAIs to be more effective, there should be financial autonomy • For PAC to be effective, there should be financial resources available • If PACs are empowered, the future is bright • PACs and SAIs should work together to ensure financial accountability
Motivation to come for 2nd Day • Ideas are being floated. Practices are being shared which will lead to best practice. • Results of discussion might not be immediate, but as ideas are shared and compared, we know whether we are on track or we can improve our actions.
