Review the Bylaws FIRST • Notify group of election process no less than 72 hours in advance • Allow group to nominate self/others • Place names and biography (parent/community) on ballot • Provide opportunity for “write-in” candidates • Establish process for the distribution of ballots per bylaws • Elections may not be conducted electronically Election Process
Bylaws – Article III Election of Council Members • Specify when elections held • Examples: “During the month of September, nomination forms will be made available to students.” “Parent/Community member representative elections will be conducted in September.” “Classroom teacher elections will be held in September.” “Other” staff elections will be held in the month of September.” Best Practices
Specify who will conduct the elections for each membership group • Examples: “Nominations and elections are conducted by the classroom teachers.” (teachers) • “Nominations and elections will be conducted by the school office staff.” (parent/community) • “Once the official ballot has been created, the currently enrolled students will vote for three (3) student members.” (students) Best Practices
Specify how notifications will be done • Examples: “Notifications and elections are conducted by classroom teachers.” (teachers) • “Announcement of the nominations will be included in the May, June, and September issues of the newsletter, and website. The announcement will also be posted on the school marquee. Nominations will be accepted in September.” (parent/community) • “During the month of September, nominations forms will be made available to students.” (students) Best Practices
All election ballots and result records will be maintained at the school site for seven (7) years. • Example: summarize the results: • Total votes: 95 • Candidate 1: 45 out of 95 votes • Candidate 2: 50 out of 95 votes • Candidate 3: 47 out of 95 votes • Candidate 4: 60 out of 95 votes Results: Candidate 4, Candidate 2, and Candidate 3 are the new members of the SSC.
