Urban Geography. The study of how people use space in cities. Central city -main city. Suburbs - are political units touching the central city or other suburbs. exurbs are smaller cities and towns with open land between them and the central city.

Urban Geography • The study of how people use space in cities. • Central city-main city. • Suburbs- are political units touching the central city or other suburbs. • exurbs are smaller cities and towns with open land between them and the central city. • Metropolitan area= city, its suburbs and exurbs. • Megalopolis- several metropolitan grown together. Example Boston to DC.

  3. Urbanization-the dramatic rise of the number of cities and the changes in lifestyles that result. • City Locations: • 1. Good transportation(rivers, lakes, coastline) • 2. Natural resources(gold, iron ore, coal) • City Purposes: • 1. Transportation Hub(a place to change means of transport) • 2. Economic activity(manufacturing) • 3. Political activity(capital)

  5. Land use • Residential- houses and apartments • Industrial-manufacturing of goods • Commercial-private business and the buying and selling of retail products.

  6. Central Business District • CBD is the core of a city based on commercial activity.
