Background • Women comprise about 35% of people living with HIV in Asia and the Pacific, a proportion that has remained stable in the past decade. • The majority of women living with HIV in the ASIA Pacific region were infected by their intimate partners. UNAIDS ASIA PACIFIC, Getting to Zero-2011
SRHR and HIV&AIDS • Poor sexual reproductive health and HIV infection share many root causes in poverty, gender inequality, stigma and cultural norms. • As an outcome of the HLM, the 2011 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS, Women and girls should be able to exercise their right to have control over matters related to their sexuality including sexual and reproductive health, free of coercion, discrimination and violence Invocus Vol3: Women&Girls, APCASO
WLHIV Situation in ASIA PACIFIC Lack of Information and Education Regarding SRHR on WLHIV. Impact: • Condoms are only contraception promoted among women with HIV in AP - not used consistently • Unwanted pregnancy on WLHIV • Lack of awareness and economy dependency factor on WLHIV to access SRHR services Positive & Pregnant, How Dare You- WAPN+
WLHIV Situation in ASIA PACIFIC, cont.. Discrimination in Health Services: • Women living with HIV have reported force sterilization by health care workers. • Women Sex worker Indonesia have reported discrimination by health care workers when they accessed STI services. Challenges The SRHR services do not integrated with HIV & AIDS services. • There is no specific program and budget allocated to integrated this services. • There is no referral services on HIV to SRH services. (Eg. Family Planning) • Indonesia Citizen Law do not encourage women who are not marriage to access SRH services. This law became barrier for young women to access information and services related SRHR • Gender inequality and cultural norms are not support Women Right issues. Achievement • Indonesia • “NAC now is preparing for women and HIV/AIDS action plan that would create gender-perspective AIDS prevention program.” (Baby, IPPI) FGD with AIDS organization at www project • Succeed collaboration with CWGI to integrate violence WLHIV and WWW research into shadow CEDAW report. • The good news is Indonesia new Minister of Health committed to solve sterilization issues among WLHIV together with Women HIV group and other CSO.
