  1. Friday, 10/11Objective/Goal: Create a journal page that explores the topic of Self-Image by creating layers of painted texture on a page and incorporating layers of writing. Drill: Write three sentences that describe the personality or character of the person in the picture based on the way the person chose to represent himself in the image. THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER FOR THIS AND, YES, YOU DO NOT KNOW THIS PERSON OR WHO HE REALLY IS. MAKE UP A CHARACTER BASED ON HIS APPEARANCE. What about the image made you think of this person as you did?

  3. Demonstration 1 - Creating layered texture • Applying watercolor wash • Using plastic wrap to create texture.

  4. To Do – 10 minutes • Create a watercolor wash using ONLY ONE COLOR in a spread of your journal. • Make sure you have a light color. • Apply wrinkles plastic wrap in areas of the pages and set aside to dry.

  5. To Do – 10 minutes • Place a piece of tracing paper over lined paper. Write on the tracing paper with a pen or permanent marker. • This is a timed assignment. Start writing when I say go and respond to the following prompt: • What do you think someone who meets you for the first time would think about you? How much of that is determined by your physical appearance? If you cannot think of anything to write keep writing “I cannot think of anything to write” over and over.

  6. Demonstration • Adding texture layers by stamping with different materials: - fabric - corn - tissue - corn leaves • Adding lines and color areas by drawing with and activating watercolor pencils.

  7. To Do – 15 minutes Experiment with ways to add stamped layers of texture/pattern on top of your dry watercolor. Try at least three different ways of adding texture. Add lines and shapes with watercolor pencil. Activate the color by applying water.

  8. To Do – 5 minutes • Write straight on the surface you just created. • This is a timed assignment. Start writing when I say go and respond to the following prompt: • How do you see yourself? If you cannot think of anything to write keep writing “I cannot think of anything to write” over and over.

Drill What medium did you use to create the background for your journal last Friday? How did you use plastic wrap to create texture? In what other ways did you create layers of texture? How are watercolor pencils different from regular color pencils? What is the difference between a book page and a book spread?

  10. Notes • Stream of Consciousness Writing: a timed writing exercise on specific topics where a person focuses on the topic and writes quietly and continuously for the set time without worrying about spelling, grammar or making sense.

  11. To Do – Writing Exercise 1 • Repeat Stream of Consciousness Exercise on transparent paper. What do you think someone who meets you for the first time would think about you? How much of that is determined by your physical appearance? If you cannot think of anything to write keep writing “I cannot think of anything to write” over and over.

  12. To Do – Writing Exercise 2 Straight on the journal page and anywhere you see fit write on the following topic: • How do you see yourself? How do you make choices on your appearance based on how you see yourself? If you cannot think of anything to write keep writing “I cannot think of anything to write” over and over.

  13. To Do • Cut, draw over, re-assemble or otherwise manipulate the writing on the transparent paper. • Select areas of the journal page to cover with the transparent paper, areas to completely cover (hide) with other material or areas to leave showing. • Take into consideration what the writing says and how the way you see yourself and the way you think others see you relate to one another or not

  14. Exit Ticket • How did doing this journal entry help you think about the way you see yourself and the way you come across to others?

  15. Tuesday, 10/22Objectives: Complete make up work as discussed in individual conferences yesterday. • Drill • What is the most pressing assignment that you need to work on today in order to maximize this make up work day? (based on yesterday’s conferences and your grade report?) • Briefly describe what you need to do to complete the assignment?

  16. To Do • Take your journal or whatever materials you need and move to the appropriate station labeled with the work you need to complete today. • Work on that assignment. • When you complete one assignment, take your journal and move to the next station you need to work on (if you have time). • All completed make up work needs to be placed on the table to the right of the door, clearly labeled with your name for grading.

  17. Exit Ticket • Place your make up work on the table to the left of the door, clearly labeled with your name. • Return all materials to their assigned area. • Get your book stamped.
