When do the elections take place? • Every 6 months • Nominations - last meeting in April and October • Excused absent scouts are called and asked if they want to run for a position • Scouts can not run for more than 3 positions • Officer and staff elections - 1st meeting in May and November • Patrol leadership positions - 2nd meeting in May and November
What are the positions? Officers • Senior Patrol leader (SPL) • Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) • Now two ASPL’s for troop organization • Quartermaster (QM) • Scribe Staff • Chaplin's Aide (CA) • Historian • Librarian • Bugler • Leave No Trace Trainer • Webmaster
What are the Positions (cont.)? • Patrol Positions • Patrol Leader (PL) • Assistant Patrol Leader (APL) • New Position: Quartermaster (PQ) • PQ position will be equivalent to APL advancement requirement
What are the By-law requirements for leadership positions? • Troop officer requirements: • a. First class or above. • b. Must have been a patrol leader. • c. Must have attended Scoutmaster Troop Junior Leader Training. • d. Voted in by troop with Scoutmaster’s approval. • Troop staff officer requirements: • a. First Class Rank or above • b. Voted in by the troop with Scoutmaster’s approval
What are the By-law requirements for leadership positions (cont.)? • Patrol Leader and Officer requirements: • a. Patrol Leader must be First Class Rank or above. • b. Patrol Staff –Assistant Patrol Leader and Patrol Quartermaster must be Second Class Rank or above. • c. Voted in by Patrol with Scoutmaster approval. • d. Term of Patrol Leader-Patrol Leader may not serve two consecutive terms
Other criteria that apply • Scout should be of good character • Respectful to all • Clean in his moral behavior • Reverent to God • Wears uniform properly • Scout should be dedicated to the troop • Attends almost all troop meetings • Attends almost all camp outs • A Scout’s desire should be for the troop to excel; i.e. do our best at Camporee, not comments similar to “the shovel doesn’t matter”
Preparation for Election Process • Scout should be in perfect class “A” uniform • Speech should be prepared reflecting on what the scout has achieved and why he is eligible for this nominated position • Scout should practice speech and presentation • Speech should be concise and to the point - not longer than 1 minute, but enough to get his point across

Leadership Responsibility Documents • Hardcopy for each position • Candidate is to review document • Gives the candidate the knowledge and responsibility of the position • Guides the candidate in creating a speech • Guides the candidate in enhancing the new position
What should and should not be in Candidate's Speech • Scout should have examples of what he will provide to the troop if his is nominated for the position • Scout should have a positive attitude • Scout should provide examples of what he has accomplished so far. • Vote for me cause I have great shoes • Vote for me cause I am great • Vote for me cause I am good looking • This is not a popularity contest or comedy central
Leadership Training • New leaders required to attend troop leadership training • Training will give scout the tools and skills to perform new position with excellence • Date for training on troop calendar
Leadership Projects • Used for advancement if scout is not elected for leadership position • Must participate in election process to qualify for leadership project • Scoutmaster approval required
