  1. The Constellation of NIAID Space-Related Health Research • NIAID works closely with other USG agencies to ensure optimization of the limited radiation research budget • NIAID-sponsored Centers for Medical Countermeasures against Radiation (CMCR) program funds low-LET radiation work; but several high-LET studies (neutrons) are in progress. • NIAID funding of DoD and CMCR facilities provides an opportunity for additional high-LET studies Presenter: Richard Hatchett Agency/Organization: NIAID Extramural/Office of Product Development

  2. HHS Radiation/Nuclear Funding ($80.2 M) DTPA NIAID CDC Pediatric KI AFRRI IAA NCI IAA Prod. Dev. CMCR Basic Research DTPA Countermeasures Screens Biodosimetry

  3. Promising Areas for Space-Related Health Research Collaborations • NIAID and NCI programs have interest in long-term, carcinogenic and mutagenic effects of low level radiation exposure • NIAID has contact with companies developing anti-mutagenic/anti-carcinogenic countermeasures relevant to radiation damage incurred during space exploration • Countermeasures currently under development for low-LET acute radiation syndrome (ARS) may have utility for high-LET exposures

  4. Existing Resources to Facilitate Space-Related Health Research • Expertise – Radiation experts funded by NIAID are encouraged to collaborate and interested in studies relevant to NASA’s mission • Low-LET Radiation Exposure Facilities – chronic, low dose, low-LET exposures can result in health effects similar to chronic High-LET exposures • Countermeasures – agents in development by the NIAID program for organ and tissue damage may fit well with NASA objectives • Assays & Animal Models – in the areas of ARS & carcinogenesis have relevance for both programs
