Novel Biodegradable Nanocomposites Based on Alkyd Resin and In-Situ Produced SilicaJames E. Mark, University of Cincinnati Main Campus, DMR 0803454 The focus of this project was to reinforce a biodegradable polymer (a glycerol-derived thermoset) with in-situ silica using a sol-gel method. Specifically, alkyd hybrid nanocomposites were successfully prepared via in-situ hydrolysis of an alkoxysilane in a glycerol-derived alkyd resin precursor, and subsequently cross linked at high temperature by polycondensation reactions. These sol-gel reactions formed ceramic-like domains having amino groups that reacted with the carboxylic acid groups on the polymeric acid at elevated temperatures, and this improved the dispersion of silica at the nanoscale level. Relatively small amounts of a bonding agent were found to increase the thermal decomposition temperatures of these hybrid materials as well as their glass transition temperatures. The upper part of the figure shows the morphology of an alkyd themoset/silica (20.0%) nanocomposite transparent film; the lower part shows a TEM image (with a 100 nm bar showing the sizes of the silica particles). Some of the results were presented to the 2008 236th ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia, and at the International Symposium of Polymer Chemistry held in Hefei, China in 2008.
