What is an adjective? • Describes a noun. • The fat cat chased the small cats. • In English, adjectives are placed BEFORE the noun it is describing. • In Spanish, adjectives are placed after the noun. • The fat cat • El gatogordo • The serious students • Los estudiantesserios.
Noun – Adjective Agreement • Adjectives must match (in gender and number) the nouns they are describing. • They can be masculine, feminine, singular, or plural. • Masculine: • El chico alto Los chicos altos • The tall boy The tall boys • Feminine: • La chicaalta Las chicasaltas • The tall girl The tall girls

Adjective Agreement • Adjectives that end in –e already match both genders. • They only have singular and plural forms. • Masculine: • El maestrointeligente Los maetrosinteligentes • The intelligent teacher The intelligent teachers • Feminine: • La maestrainteligente Las maestrasinteligentes • The intelligent teacher The intelligent teachers

Adjectives that end in consonants • Some adjectives that end in consonants must add an –a to form the feminine singular. • YOU MUST MEMORIZE THESE!!! • Masculine: • El chicotrabajador • The hard-working boy • Feminine: • La chicatrabajadora • The hard-working girl
Continued… • To make adjectives plural, follow the same rule for nouns (not z). • If an adjective / noun ends in a vowel add –s • If an adjective / noun ends in a consonant add –es . • Masculine: • Los chicostrabajadores • The hard-working boys • Feminine: • Las chicastrabajadoras • The hard-working girls
