SITE-TESTING FOR ELT’S Workshop in La Serena – with participants in Tucson, Morelia, Santa Cruz, Pasadena, Venice October 22-23, 2001
MEETING GOALS We need to be able to be sure that the information is available so that, given a set of scientific and technical requirements for a telescope, we can identify a “best” site. • Discuss methods for modeling and measuring wind flow and turbulence on all relevant scales, • Quickly review our programs and decide whether there are other areas that need our attention • Review collaborations and information exchange mechanisms already in place
PROGRAM - MONDAY 1400-1410 Welcome, Meeting Goals, Agenda Review (WALKER) 1410-1420 Western hemisphere Cloud Cover Surveys (WALKER) 1420-1440 The NIO/CTIO site-testing program (BLUM) 1440-1500 A site for CELT (Schoeck) 1500-1520 A nest for OWL (Sarazin) 1520-1530 Break 1530-1550 Chajnantor & the Cornell-Texas telescope (Giovanelli) 1550-1610 The NIO/Gemini testing of Mauna Kea (Wainscoat) 1610-1630 Mexican sites and site-testing (Avila) 1630-1650 Light pollution in the ELT context (Smith) 1650-1800 Round Table Discussion -- issues arising from the above presentations 2000 Dinner
PROGRAM - TUESDAY 1200-1400 Round-table discussion on measuring and modeling optical turbulence 1400-1430 lunch 1430-1600 Round-table continued 1600-1630 Wrap-up
Cloud and PWV • Survey using meteorological satellite images over a temporal baseline sufficient so that the “average” conditions are close to the “long term average” • Well-defined methodology – output “photometric”, “spectroscopic”, “unsuitable” conditions based on cloud cover. Measures suitability for IR astronomy based on the PWV column above the sites • Dispassionate comparison thus possible
Cloud and PWV • Northern Chile (20.5-30.5 S latitudes); Meteosat 3 (July 1993 – Dec 1994), GOES 8 (Jan 1995 – Feb 1996, June 1997 – Sept 1999). Finished April 2001. (NOAO/U. Tokyo/ESO) • Colorado-Arizona for the Rocky Mountain Observatory Consortium: uses a subset of the above data. Finished Oct 2000. (NOAO/RMO) • SW USA-Mexico (18-40 N latitudes): Uses same dataset as the Chile study). Expected ~ April 2002 (CELT/NOAO/U. Tokyo/ESO) • Mauna Kea – Chile comparison: Uses new data set from GOES WEST (June 1997 – May 2002) for MK, and reprocess equivalent GOES – EAST data for Chile. Expected ~ end 2002 (NOAO/CELT)
