  2. LAST WEEK SPIRITUAL MOMENT DISTRICT CONVENTION SPEAKER Congratulations! Happy Birthday! Bob Cook 7/20 Happy Anniversary! Ed & Roya Ash 7/18 Jim & Ginny Dunford 7/19 Al & Gerry Russ 7/20 Date Joined: None Sign up for this year’s Kiwanis District Convention. If you haven’t been to a District Convention, you should go to this one! It will be held in Tampa, August 25 – 28. We are funding attendees up to $200 each. Jane Alvarez presented the Spiritual Moment last week. Another great example of why these moments are so worthwhile. Thank you Jane. We heard from Mike Clark last week. He is the editor of the Florida Times-Union editorial page, previously the reader advocate. Mike did a good job telling us about the newspaper business in Jacksonville. Among many things he explained that the editorial position of the paper is chosen by the owners, and that the copy he writes may not match his own opinions on any given subject. There was a lively discussion of whether or not the press should be granted some special legal privilege that allows them to not respond to a subpoena when it requires the naming of a confidential source. Mike seemed to think that such privilege was needed, while some in the group worried that it could be abused. After all, journalists are people too…at least most of them seem to be. We must thank Mike for a very educational presentation and some thought provoking commentary. What more could we ask. Find the hidden meaning in each pictogram. Welcome Guests BA   ED U M R 1. 9. 5. 2. 6. 10. Jim Lee brought a WWII bomber pilot last week. It turns out that Frank Young, Jim’s father-in-law, is also a retired reporter and editor for the Florida Times-Union. I bet he felt right at home among our group. 3. 7. 11. 4. 12.
