  2. The Baby Boom: The increased US birth rate, 1946-1964

Suburbanization:The growth of areas on fringes of cities • Families left aging cities for newer suburbs • Levittown, NY : a symbol of suburbanization • Contributed to decline of many cities and neglect of public transportation • Beginning of “white flight” (whites moving out of predominantly non-white cities)

  4. Interstate Highway Act of 1956 • Provided funding for what became 44,000 miles of interstate highways • The car is king
