Temperature • Temperature is the measure of the averagekinetic (moving) energy of a object. This doesn’t mean the object is moving, only the particles that make up the object-they are vibrating. • Temperature is measured by a thermometer, iron/copper junction (thermocouple) and other spectrophotometer instruments. • Temperature in weather is measured on the Fahrenheit (°F) scale. • Temperature in science is measured in the Celsius (°C) or centigrade scale.
Astronomical Temperatures • Stars are much hotter than your summers, and still hotter than most scientific instruments. The only match is thermonuclear explosions. And space is much colder than winter or even liquid nitrogen. • Astronomical temperatures are measured on the Kelvin scale. Name for Lord Kelvin who did experiments with gases and temperature and calculated absolute zero (0°K) which is -273.15 °C.
Convertion Temperatures on three different temperature scales. • Temperature conversions on three scales is accomplished using Formulas-mathematical relationship between quantities.. • °F °C °C= (°F-32°) (Formula 1) • °C °F °F= °C · 9°F (Formula 2) • °C °K °K = °C + 273° (Formula 3) • °K °C °C = °K – 273° (Formula 4) · 5°C 9°F + 32° 5°C
Examples • 68°F = ? °C • Formula 1 & Substitute • °C = (68°F – 32°) • °C = (36°F) = 4 · 5°C = 20°C · 5°C 9°F ·5°C 9°F NOTE: DO NOT USE SIGNIFICANT FIGURES HERE. THESE ARE NUMBERS NOT MEASUREMENTS.
Examples • 70°C = ? °F • Formula 2 & Substitute • °C = (70°C)·9°F 14·9°F +32° • =126°F + 32° = 158 °F = +32° 5°C
Examples • 37°C = ? °K • Formula 3 & Substitute • °K = 37°C + 273.15° 37°C + 273°= 310 °K
Examples • 10,000°K = ? °C • Formula 4 & substitute • °C = 10,000°K -273.15° 10,000°K -273° • = 9,727 °C
Example (Multi Operations) • 7500°K = ? °F • Step 1 Formula 4: °K °C °C = 7518°K – 273° = 7245°C • Step 2 Formula 2 : °C °F °F = 7245°C = 1449· 9°F = 13,040°F ·9°F 5°C
Reminder Problems • Formula 1 °F °C • 15°F = ? °C • °C = (15°F-32°) = -17°F ·5°C = • -1.888 · 5°C = -2· 5°C = -10°C Round to nearest degree ·5 °C 9°F 9°F
Reminder Problems • Formula 2 °C °F • 17°C = ? °F • °F= 17°C = 3.4 · 9°F +32° Round to nearest degree • = 3·9°F +32° = 27°F + 32° = 59°F ·9°F +32° 5 °C
