  2. Nouns! Common Nouns: Names any one of a group of persons, place, things, or ideas and is generally not capitalized. Ex: scientists, woman, city, building, continent, day. Proper Nouns: names a particular person, place, thing, or idea and is capitalized. Ex: Marie Curie, Charles Drew, Monday, Thursday, Labor day. Concrete Noun: Names a person, place or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses(sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell). Ex: cloud, poison ivy, thunder, silk, yogurt, Marilu Abstract Noun: Names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or charachteristic. Ex: freedom, well being, beauty, and kindness.

  3. Pronouns! Pronoun: a word that is used in place of one or more nouns or pronouns. Ex: Stan bought a suit and an overcoat.Hewillwearthemtomorrow. Antecedent: the Word that a pronoun stands for or refers to. Ex: Why did Oscar give his camera to the film school? Personal Pronouns: refers to one speaking (first person), the one spoken to (second person), or the one spoken about (third person). Ex: First person : I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, ours. Second person: you, your, yours. Third person: he, him, his, she, her, hers, it, its, they, them, their, theirs. Demonstrative pronoun: used to point out a specific person, place, thing or idea. Ex: this, that, these, those. Interrogative Pronoun: introduces a question. Ex: who, whom, which, what, whose.

  4. Adjectives! Adjective: is a word that is used to modify a noun or a pronoun Ex: what kind : GRAY skies; IRISH lace; LOWEST price; FAR-FETCHED tale. Demonstrative Adjectives: They take the place of nouns or pronouns Ex: demonstrative adjectives : did Jennifer draw THIS picture or THAT one? Articles: The most frequently used adjectives are a, an, and the. Ex: A girl won. THE girl won. Pronouns Adjectives I like THAT. I like THAT shirt. EITHER will do. EITHER car will do. WHICH is yours? WHICH one is yours.

  5. Verbs! Verbs: Is a word that is used to express action or a state of being. Ex: Perla was eating a butterfly. Helping verbs: Also called auxiliary verb helps the main verb expression action or a state of being. Ex: can, could, did, does, do, had, has, have, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would.   6. Adverbs! An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs modifying verbs: Ex: We lived up THERE, Please step UP, I have the ticket HERE Adverbs modifying adjectives: Ex: The compass I bought was incredibly cheap. Incredibly-cheap. Adverbs modifying other verbs: Ex: we tried to be at the stadium by6: 30pm; HOWEVER, we arrived at the wrong time.

  7. Prepositions! Preposition: a word that shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word. Commonly used prepositions: aboard, about, above, below, beneath, beside, from, in, since, through, throughout, concerning, down, during, of, off, on, onto, without. Compound prepositions: According to, as of, aside from, in place of, next to, out of, prior to.

  8. Interjections! Interjection:a word that expresses emotion, it has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence Ex: Ah!, aha!, boy-oh-boy!, hey!, hurrah!, oh!, oops!, ouch!, uh-oh!, well!, whew!, whoa!, wow!, yahoo, yikes!, yippee!.
