Exploring Early Pennsylvania • Paleontologist- study fossils • Archaeologist- study artifacts • Artifacts are manmade objects that show how people lived long ago • At archaeological sites such as Meadowcroft Rockshelter, scientists search for the remains of people and things from long ago
Early People • Nomads followed wooly mammoths across the Bering land bridge…it melted and they were trapped • Climate and rich soil in PA allowed them to farm so they could settle in one place
Lenni Lenape • Also known as the Delaware • Lived along the banks of the Brandywine and Delaware rivers • Lived in longhouses • Forced off their land by other tribes and colonists
Shawnee • Called the Lenni Lenape their “grandfathers” because they were so alike • Lived in longhouses • Lived by the Susquehanna River
Iroquois • Lived in longhouses • To end fighting among themselves, they formed the Iroquois League of the Five Nations, a group that formed rules for all five tribes to follow • Became the most powerful Native American group in North America • Our constitution is based on their rules
Susquehannock • Lived in longhouses • Protected their villages with palisades • Always at war • Died out by 1763
Tamanend • Most famous Lenape chief • Symbol of peace and fairness
