Page 3 Geographic Vocabulary • globe: an accurate map of Earth • Geographic terms: words that describe bodies of water and landforms – gulf, valley, bay, etc. • Latitude: lines on a map that run east and west • Longitude: lines on a map that run from the North Pole to the South Pole. • Geography: the study of our natural surrounding and how humans interact with them. • Physical features: names of bodies of water and landforms such as Gulf of Mexico. • 0 degrees latitude: equator • 0 degrees longitude: Prime Meridian • Compass rose: symbol on a map that shows directions • Cardinal points: four main points on a compass rose • North America: located in the northern and western hemispheres

  6. Page 5 European Exploration • (paragraph written from foldable…as a class.) European explores were motivated to explore the west because they wanted power. Power comes from wealth, spreading Christianity, and claiming land. They were looking for wealth through finding gold and spices. They wanted to spread Christianity to other people. Finally, they were looking for land to expand their empire. Because they wanted power, European explorers were motivated to explore the west. (Please be aware that this is an “outline” paragraph and just a jumping off point for the students to begin writing their own paper with more details.)
