  2. WHAT IS LITTER? Litter: Objects strewn or scattered around. Since the beginning of humanity people have been littering. But only since the mass production of plastic in the 40s and 50s has litter started to become a real problem. Unlike the organic waste from earlier times plastics take a long time to break down in the environment. Litter pollutes the local environment. Discarded plastic bottles and other types of litter can injure native animals and clog up rivers or streams. Too much litter is ugly and can attract rats which can spread diseases.

  3. WHAT CAUSES LITTER? Humans cause litter. Nearly all the products we use are non-organic and when they become litter they take years to break down. These products come in the form of plastic bottles, plastic bags, aluminum cans or glass bottles and many more. In developed countries we litter because we are too lazy to put rubbish in the bin. In developing countries they don’t have many bins or a proper rubbish service to take it away.

  4. How can we stop litter? As an individual you can • Always put your waste in the bin • Try and always recycle • Clean up after yourself and others • Use paper bags instead of plastic since they only take 2-4 weeks to decompose • Bring your own bags when you go shopping

  5. Does non-organic litter ever decompose? • Plastic bags: 10-20 years • Aluminum cans: 80-200 years • Disposable nappies: 450 years • Glass bottle: 500 years • Styrofoam: Never!

  6. Today's actions against litter Littering fines: Littering fines can range from $60 for stubbing a cigarette but in the ground or $750 for aggravated littering The National Waste Policy: As of 2009 the Australian government agreed on the national waste policy. It aims to slow down the generation of waste since Australia does not have enough resources to support it if it grows. One of their campaigns slogans is reduce, reuse, recycle.

  7. No more litter Today littering is one of the biggest environmental issues we face today. If we don’t improve on our habits our natural environment will become drowned by rubbish. Remember put that in the bin!
