  3. qualitative researchInterpretive descriptions rather than statistics are used to analyze underlying meanings and patterns of social relationships. • quantitative researchGoal is scientific objectivity and the focus is on data that can be measured numerically.

  4. random samplingEvery member of an entire population being studied has the same chance of being selected. • probability samplingParticipants are deliberately chosen because they have specific characteristics.

  5. validityThe extent to which a study or research instrument accurately measures what it is supposed to measure. • reliabilityThe extent to which a study or research instrument yields consistent results.

  6. research methodsStrategies or techniques for conducting research. • surveyPoll in which the researcher gathers facts or attempts to determine the relationships among facts.
