  3. Inflammatory conditions • Anal fissure – posterior tear (trauma, including childbirth) • Anal gland abscess – causes fistula • Venereal diseases: • Syphilis – posterior fissure • Granuloma inguinale – granulomatous response to intracellular bacteria • Chancroid – Haemophilus ducreyii

  4. Neoplasia • Viral warts (condylomata acuminata) • HPV associated (types 6,11 – benign, types16, 18 – associated with cancer) • Similar pathology to vulval/cervical neoplasia • HIV associated

  5. Anal carcinoma • Invariably squamous cell • Precancerous phases • Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) I-III +/- warts • HPV 16, 18 • Treated by surgery or radical radiotherapy
