PFRR ALOMAR PEARL SUARF IPY: Pan-Arctic Studies of the Coupled Tropospheric, Stratospheric and Mesospheric Circulation. Richard L. Collins1, David E. Atkinson1 Brentha Thurairajah1, V. Lynn Harvey2 1: University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2: University of Colorado AON Workshop 2008
Project Status and Progress • Lidar observations and analyses have been conducted through the first IPY season. • Lidar stations have documented several life cycles of the Aleutian Anti-Cyclone and Stratospheric Vortex. • Web-based forecasting and briefing site has been established and operated through the year; http://research.iarc.uaf.edu/IPY-CTSM/. • Extended stream function synoptic analyses from 45 km to 75 km. • Validation program in development with community models (e.g., GEOS-5, WAACM). • Archive of operational forecasts for subsequent verification. • Data integration includes significant interagency contribution (e.g., NASA, NOAA, NWS). AON Workshop 2008
Coordination and Integration Plans Review of data for first year, identify key events and case studies for further analysis (e.g. stratospheric warming). Survey key community sites and similar centers for seasonal reviews of middle atmosphere behavior. Professional presentations to wider remote sensing and atmospheric science community before 08-09 field season (e.g., ILRC, CEDAR, EMASOM). Develop stronger interactions with community model teams. See poster for discussion of impact of change in Arctic summer sea ice impact on middle atmosphere. Promote tropospheric-stratospheric coupling studies using nested models (e.g., WRF). AON Workshop 2008
Future Directions and Planning for the 2008 Season Review of data for first year, identify key events, and case studies for further analysis. Refine observing strategy based on results of 2007-2008. Implement IPY data sharing and access.Upload data to Cooperative Arctic Data and Information Service (CADIS). Two planning meeting with IPY partners: one in US in June and one in Europe in August.
