  4. Who is involved in Genre BINGO? • Students: Pick a column and read the designated genres within that column • All Classrooms: Teachers do read alouds from their Genre BINGO card. Genres should be taught in the classrooms. • Instructional Coaches: provide incentives, copies of BINGO cards • Special Area Classes: Do read alouds during classes.

  5. Student’s Role Reading books and completing Genre BINGO slips. Conference with the teacher. When their row is completed they turn it in to their assigned IC. Teacher’s Role Give students at least 20 minutes of free reading time a day. Conference with students after they finish a book. Who is involved in Genre BINGO?

  6. When is Genre BINGO? • Started at the beginning of every month. Students will listen to the news to hear what type of game we are playing (four corners, across, diagonal…) • Ends at the end of the month. Listen to the news to hear the winners each month. • Students can read during SSR and home reading to complete their cards.

  7. Where do students get books/articles for Genre BINGO? • Library (Mrs. Campbell will be speaking with students about the genres that apply to each grade level and where they can be found in the Media Center) • Class libraries (Label your books by genre to help students easily find books and articles.) • Internet (Print recipes, news articles, songs, poems, narrative essays) • Instructional Coaches

  8. How do we find time for Genre BINGO? • Read alouds during content areas • Students reading during SSR time • Read aloud during transition time

  9. Why Genre BINGO? • Different genres are noted in each grade levels’ standards. • Teachers are responsible for teaching genres • Kids will gain a better understanding of what they are reading and writing • Sets a purpose

How can Related Arts get involved? • Activate your lesson with a poem, newspaper article, or short picture book. • Keep books about your subject area for early finishers to read. • Send the name of the book, author, and genre back with the class. • The classroom teacher can add this read aloud to their Classroom BINGO

  11. How can Resource, Speech, and ESOL get involved? • Activate your lesson with a poem, newspaper article, or short picture book. • Keep books out for early finishers to read. • Help students fill out a Genre BINGO slip. The student can add this to his/her individual BINGO card.

  12. Are there rewards for Genre BINGO? • Students that complete the BINGO for the month will paint a ceiling tile on the “Genre Walk of Fame” • Classes that complete Genre BINGO will be put into a drawing for a free book for their classroom.

  13. Extra Genre BINGO info... • Students will use the same card for 5 months. Stress the importance of keeping up with this card. • There is a classroom game going on the same time as the student games. • Classes should keep their chart outside their classroom door. • K5-1st will only play as a whole class the first several months. • Hold students accountable for what they are reading– Response Cards
