A VIEW OF AMERICA THROUGH MOVIES ACCESS 11TH GRADERS ,DECEMBER 18TH AMAL AND AMERICAN EMBASSY
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY • The students read the background on the topic, then answered reading and comprehension questions. • The students watched the movies , then answered general questions on what they watched. • The teachers conducted a discussion which allowed the students to express themselves on the issue presented. HERE ARE THE PRODUCTS OF THE DISCUSSION PER GROUP
BLACK AMERICANS • What do you think can be done to improve Black Americans' conditions? • How can we change people's way of thinking?
GROUP 2: RAHAT ELRAZI & SEGEV SHALOM • We can improve Black Americans’ conditions: • by giving them work and integrating them into American society • by giving them rights • by giving them freedom and justice • by treating them as equals
GROUP 3 : TEL SHEVA A & SEGEV SHALOM 2 • American people have to accept Black people in their society • We believe movies and newspapers can change the way people refer to Blacks
THE CONQUEST OF THE WEST • Do you think the Americans were right in fighting for staying in the West? • Did they have any other choice?
GROUP 4: APPLEMAN 1 + TEL SHEVA ELBYAN • Americans were right in fighting because there were many outlaws and not enough sheriffs or people to enforce the law • It was not easy to expel the Indians because they lived there for a long time • On the other hand, the Americans should have respected the Indians’ territory
GROUP 5: APPLEMAN 2 & KSEYFE ABU RABYA • We think the Americans didn’t have the right to fight the Indians because the West was their land. They could have made a deal with the Indians and live in peace together • Outlaws caused a big problem in the West and the settlers found it hard to defend themselves
THE AMERICAN DREAM • What image (positive and negative) is shown of America? • What were people forced to do in order to succeed and to show they were somebody?
GROUP 2 :SEGEV SHALOM 1 & RAHAT ELRAZI • Everyone can make his dream come true because our future is in our hands but first we should improve ourselves and be responsible • It may be easier for poor people to live in America because it’s the land of chances
GROUP 3: SEGEV SHALOM 2 & TEL SHEVA A • Not everybody succeeds in the U.S.A • Success in life depends on many things: luck, but also hard work. • Anyone can study what he wants , where he wants. • The Declaration of Independence states that all men are equal and can succeed
ECOLOGY • Do you think that the environment in which you live is satisfactory? Give examples. • What could you do to improve the situation?
GROUP 1: LAKYA • There are lots of bad habits that make us feel sick; for example, many kinds of food are unhealthy and more and more people eat them • Many devices may harm the people who use them ; for example, cellphones may cause cancer and pollution from cars or factories harm environment
GROUP 6 : HURA AHED & HURA RABIN • The environment I live in is not satisfactory: It’s dirty, water is polluted, so is the air • There are many chemicals • People are responsible for the deterioration of the environment • The government is responsible for cleaning and enforcing the laws • We can raise awareness using newspapers, movies and Facebook
Students’ personal testimony: “I live close to Dimona Nuclear Plant . I am worried about the risks of explosions and cancer caused by radiation from the plant. I think it’s a very serious issue that the government should deal with”
WOMEN LEADERSHIP • Do you believe women can play a significant role in changing the world they live in?
GROUP 1 : LAKYA • Women can make a change: If a woman can raise a child and give him everything to improve, she can lead a community • Women trust themselves and they continue fighting despite the difficulties they face • Women should get the opportunity to prove that they can change the world
GROUP 4: TEL SHEVA ELBYAN & APPLEMAN 1 • Women demonstrated and fought for their rights • The role of women in society has changed: They have positions in governments, industry, sports and in the media • Women have more opportunities to face challenges
GROUP 5 :APPLEMAN 2 & KSEYFE ABURABYA • Women are better than men because they are stronger in order to overcome difficulties in life • Women should get their rights without fighting • Women worked hard to get out of home • Nowadays, many women have men’s jobs
GROUP 6: HURA AHED & HURA RABIN • Women can not play a significant role in changing the world because they face many problems and won’t be able to find solutions, but we believe they have to be free and able to express their opinions
