  5. Why Does the City of Brooklyn Park Use Bio-diesel? • 1. Bio-diesel is safe, biodegradable, and reduces serious air pollutants such as soot, particulates, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and air toxins. Bio-Diesel acts like a detergent additive, loosening and dissolving sediments. Bio-diesel is also a superior lubricant. • 2. We feel the improvements in emissions, reduction in odor and quieter operation of diesel powered vehicles/equipment will offset any cost difference in the fuel.

  6. Bio-Diesel Today • Six Years Later We are: • Still using B-20 now & into 2008 • One of the first in the State to use Bio-Diesel for all diesel equipment in the fleet (100 vehicles ) • Blending B-20 with half #1 diesel & half #2 diesel for Winter Months (Artic blend) • Have always bought Biodiesel Standard (ASTM D 6751) American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) product(s) from a reliable vender

  11. Conclusions and Recommendations • Biodiesel is an alternative fuel produced from vegetable oils or animal fats. Pure Bio-diesel contains no petroleum and yet is miscible with petrodiesel fuels. Bio-diesel has been shown to increase the lubricating qualities of the fuel. • Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that is produced in the United States and it’s use helps reduce dependence on overseas oil imports. Biodiesel burns cleaner than petroleum diesel. Using Bio-diesel lessens exposure to harmful emissions that we breathe working around or riding in diesel powered vehicles/equipment. • Minnesota has passed a law that states B-2 will come into use when two things occur; 8 million gallons of biodiesel must be in place and, secondly a federal or state tax credit of 2 to 3 cents per gallon must be in place, or June 30th 2005 is reached. (Rochester and Albert Lea Plants opened!) • There is nothing for mechanics or drivers to change when using B-20 or B-5. There have been observed no lubricity or gelling problems and no complaints from drivers or mechanics. To date the city has not found a “down side to the product, B-20 or B-5. • Because B-20 or B-5 is better for the environment, is a natural lubricant and a renewable resource, in the long run it is a better investment for the city to use. • The city intends to continue looking at all options available to our fleet of vehicles/equipment to best serve the citizens of our city. We will work closely with others to develop “win – win” strategies placing us in the forefront of technology.
