NSDC 2013 DEBATING SEMINAR
NSDC 2013 - NSDC 2013 consists of 5 Preliminary Rounds. The Top 16 teams will proceed to the knockout rounds. - NSDC 2013 will use the Worlds Parliamentary System (WSDC Style).
WSDC Format - WSDC style puts emphasis on public speaking. Most of your audiences are students, teachers, or even common citizens who have no prior knowledge to debating. - WSDC style demands speakers to always be politically correct. This is because debaters will be representing a country, debating against another country.
Types of Motion - Proposal - Value Judgement Different types of motions will require debaters to prove different elements for the motion to stand/fall.
Defining a Motion (As Proposition) - Based on WSDC style rule, a motion is intended to be defined as generally as possible, unless otherwise stated. Ex: “This house supports free immigration” “That developing nations should place limits on internal rural urban migration” “That Turkey is better off outside of the EU”
Approaching a Motion (as Opposition) - An opposition is NOT required to negate everything that the proposition said. - The opposition are allowed to prove: a) that the problem brought by the opposition doesn’t exist; or b) that the problem exists, but there are alternatives to solve it; or c) that the problem exists, but the Proposition is only making things worse; or d) that the problem exists, and the Opposition has a better way to solve it.
Judging a Debate - Manner (40%) - Matter (40%) - Method (20%) Unlike other formats, WSDC style judges these elements individually.
Manner (Style) Speakers need to have exceptional manner, because: - You will be speaking on behalf of the country - Your judges will be teachers from countries where English is their main language.
Manner (Style) Elements of Manner: - Clarity & Fluency of the speech - Grammar & choice of words - Political correctness - Persuasiveness - Proper use of emphasis, tone of voice, and pauses.
Manner (Style) - There are a lot of parameters of a persuasive speech. Speaking slow is not the only one. Example: Being emotional, having an entertaining speech, using witty jokes, etc. - Offensive statements & mild personal attacks might sound funny and may grab attention in other formats, but it won’t be tolerated in WSDC.
Matter (Content) Debating is a clash of ideas. Therefore, debaters will also be judged according to the quality of their ideas. Both Arguments and Responses/Rebuttals are included as parts of your “ideas”/”Matters”
Matter (Content) Elements of Matter: - The relevance of the title to the content of the point. (Assertion) - The depth & quality of explanation (Reasoning) - The supporting facts of the point (Statistics, Case study, or parallel examples) - How does the point supports the case of your team. (Linkback)
Method (Strategy) Method is the art of presenting a case, both individually or as a team. Team Strategy: - Issue, Model & Stance - Division of arguments between speakers Individual Strategy: - “Sign posting” - Time management - Role fulfillment
Method (Strategy) Example: - If a speaker says that he/she will bring two arguments, he/she is expected to allocate the same amount of time for each argument. - If a team will bring 3 arguments, the 1st speaker is expected to bring 2 of them, because the 2nd speaker will have to bring more rebuttals
Points of Information Points of Information is a very important tool to advance your team’s case. - Each team should offer at least 2 POIs during each of their opponent’s speech. - Each speaker should receive at least 2 POIs during their speech, if possible.
