Skeleton of the upper limb Human Anatomy I UNIVERSITY OF THE GAMBIA FACULTY OF MEDICINE & ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES
Appendicular Skeleton • The appendicular skeleton is made up of the bones of the limbs and their girdles
Bones of the upper limb Bones of the pectoral girdle Bones of the free part of the upper limb • Arm: Humerus. • Forearm: Radius and ulna. • Hand: Carpus, metacarpus and • phalanges. • Clavicle • Scapula
Pectoral Girdle • The pectoral girdles consist of the clavicle and the scapulae • They attach the upper limbs to the axial skeleton in a manner that allows for maximum movement • They provide attachment points for muscles that move the upper limbs
Clavicles Shaft Subclavian groove Trapeziod line
Scapulae It extend from 2nd to 7th ribs.
Humerus Parts Proximal end Details Distal end
X-ray of the proximal end of the humerus The surgical neck is a common fracture site of the humerus
X-ray of the shaft of the humerus In this fracture the radial nerve and the deep artery of the arm can be injured.
Humerus The following parts of the humerus are in direct contact with these nerve. • Surgical neck • Radial groove • Distal end of the humerus • Medial epicondyle Axillary nerve Radial nerve Median nerve Ulnar nerve
Ulna and radius Radial notch
Fracture of the radius Fracture of the distal end of the radius is the most common fracture in adults older than 50 years and occurs more frequently in women because their bones are more commonly weakened by osteoporosis
Fracture of the radius The fracture of the distal end of the radius is called Colles’ fracture. Patients with this fracture exhibit a dinner fork deformity.
Carpus • Contains 8 carpal bones Bound tightly by ligaments Arranged in 2 rows Proximal Scaphoid Lunate Triquetral Pisiform Distal Trapezium Trapezoid Capitate Hamate
Joints of the upper limb Sternoclavicular joint

Elbow Joint • The elbow joint includes three joints. • Humeroulnar- hinge joint • Humeroradial- gliding joint • Radioulnar proximal- pivot joint
