Birth and Early Years • Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau, Austria. • Adolf was 1 of 6 children- 3 of whom died at early ages
Parents • Father was Alois Hitler. Very strict with young Hitler. • Father passed away when Hitler was 14. • Mother was Klara Hitler. Very close to Hitler. • Mother passes away when Hitler is 18 Years old. • Mother dies of Breast Cancer. • Hitler always carried a picture of his mother with him.
Education • Adolf wanted to become an artist when he was young. • Drops out of high school when his father dies. • Applies to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts but is rejected twice.
Teen Years • Moves to Austria to pursue life as an artist. • Is homeless for a short time. • Slept on park benches and ate in soup kitchens to survive.
Early Influences • Influenced by anti-Semitic Mayor of Vienna- Karl Lueger • Belief in German Nationalism begins to grow.
Military Life • Enlists in German Army during World War I • Highest rank is that of a Corporal • Job in War was that of a messenger
Military Life • Was Awarded the Iron Cross twice. • Iron Cross is the highest military honor in the German Army. • Biggest act of bravery- capturing 4 French Soldiers • War Injury- Blinded by a gas attack towards the end of the War.
Beliefs after War • Believed Jews and Communist were responsible for Germany losing the War. • Depressed after the war. • Goes undercover for the army to find Communist.
Politics • Joins the German Workers Party • Becomes the eventual leader • Changes name of the Party to The National Socialist German Worker’s Party • Nazi party
Politics • Adopted the color red and the Swastika as the party symbol\ • Was arrested for treason in 1923 • During his trial his popularity grows • Was sentenced to Five years but only serves five months
Mein Kampf • Hitler writes Mein Kampf while in prison. • Mein Kampf means “My Struggle”. • Book sells 5 million copies and makes him rich. • Three Main points: • A. Jews were evil • B. Germans were superior race • C. Introduced the Fuhrer principal
Hitler Gains Power • Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany in 1933 • What made Hitler popular in Germany? • A. Germany was in economic depression • B. Hitler was a WWI hero • C. Promised that he would end Communist threat • D. Blamed Jews for Germany’s problems • E. Hitler was an excellent public speaker
Absolute Power • Soldiers were called Bownshirts or the SA (Stormtroopers) • By 1933 all political parties were outlawed except for the Nazi Party] • “Heil” becomes official Nazi greeting. • Hitler had no political opposition. • Reichstag fire give Hitler Total Power. • Began rearming German Army for expansion of his Reich.
Nuremberg Laws of 1935 • Anti-Semitic laws in Nazi Germany • Anti-Semitism- hostility towards or discrimination against Jews • Classified people • Deprived Jews of Citizenship • Nazi boycott of Jewish Businesses
The Holocaust • 1938- Jewish Persecution becomes more aggressive: • A. Jewish property taken • B. Force to wear the yellow star • C. Jews relocated to Ghettos • Holocaust- The mass murder or genocide of approximately six million Jews during World War II • Over one million Jewish children killed
Concentration Camps • Used to purge “undesirables” – Jews; criminals; homosexuals; Romani people and the handicapped • Bergen- Belsen • Auschwitz • Gas Champers
Hitler’s Death • Hitler retreats to Bunker 1945 • April 29, 1945- Marries Mistress Eva Braun • April 30, 1945- commits suicide in his bunker by shooting himself • Eva Braun also commits suicide (poisoning) • German soldiers burn his body
