Early History • Began with Sumerians 4000 B.C. • built taverns and inns for weary traders • Other important countries • Egypt • visiting the pyramids • souvenir shops • cruises • Greece • Greek became the universal trade language • Greek money became the standard of exchange • Roman Empire • developed roads • then many wars stopped travel until the Renaissance Period

  3. Development in the United States • Inns for Stagecoach Travelers • established in the 1600’s – provided fresh horses, meals and a place to stay • places to discuss politics and recruit soldiers • 1st – New York City’s City Hotel – paid $2 for a room and 4 meals

Grand Hotels for Railroad Travelers (offered luxury accommodations) • Tremont House in Boston – 1828 • 1st – hotelier • 1st – bellhop to carry luggage up the stairs • started a revolution for luxury hotels in Europe • Savoy Hotel in London – developed by Cesar Ritz • developed elegant dining with Escoffier • Ritz 1st to give private bath, built-in closets and telephones • 1900’s Ellsworth Statler – 1st hotel chain • uniform standards for every room • telephones, closets w/ lights, radios and morning paper • service rules established

  6. Airport Hospitality for Air Travelers • 1958 – downtown hotels began to decline • Airports new center for hotel, motel and restaurant development • J.W. Marriott opened hotels near airports • Increased international travel and business travel

Factors Affecting Success • Weather • Political Conditions • Prompted stricter airline and travel security • Economic Conditions • Recession or contraction- slows industry and takes longest to recover • Expansion – businesses do very well • Globalization – different nations economies become interconnected • one countries troubles can affect several others

  12. Trends for the Future • Trends are a general direction something is moving, different than a fad • Current trend in the food and beverage industry? • Specialty coffees • Laptop computers – started the Internet amenity in hotels, more travelers requesting Internet connections
