Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) Mission Particles and Fields Package Pre-Environmental Review May 22 -23, 2012 10a – Vibration Paul Turin, PFP Mechanical Lead
Flight Vibration Testing Vibe testing per MAVEN ERD, GEVS Powered off during testing 3-sigma soft-clipping, no force-limiting Instruments remain bagged through testing Performed at local vendor Quanta Labs (THEMIS, RBSP, NuSTAR, FOXSI, etc) SWIA ETU vibe
Flight Test levels Typo in ERD
Test and Evaluation Test sequence Fixture survey UUT installation, monitor accel installation done through bagging Pre-test sine survey 1/2g Protoflight random test Post-test survey 1/2g Pass criteria Successfully passed testing if the unit is not degraded mechanically, functionally, or structurally. Survey comparison Freq shifts <3% Amplitude changes <30% No loose fasteners or hardware, other damage PIN test Pass post-vibration functional, and deployment if applicable
Other Required Tests Structural Loads: All instruments except SWEA designed to design loads determined using “design by analysis” FOSs (2.0 yield, 2.6 ult). SWEA will undergo a centrifuge strength test (38g, 30s/axis) due to lower STEREO design load. An acoustic test will be performed on STATIC due to its thin carbon foils. These successfully passed ETU testing. Instruments with SMA releases (we don’t use pyros) undergo two self-shock tests. External shock test deferred to Orbiter-level testing per ERD 4.2.5.5.4. Pressure profile by analysis: We follow GSFC 1 in2/ft3 rule of thumb (conservative).
