Improving STI counseling services of non-formal providers through academic detailing by medical representatives Authors: HaribondhuSarma Saima Khan and Elizabeth Oliveras Session: Strategies to Support Health Workers to Deliver CareDate: Monday, 19 July 2010Time: 13:00-14:00Room: Mini Room 6
Background & Methods Background: • Health provision by non-formal providers (NFP) is increasing • Services of NFP are questionable • Academic detailing of medical representatives (MR) is effective to improve the services of NFP • Intervention: • Developed STI counseling guidelines • Training of MR on detailing and dissemination • Data collection: • Conducted 67 mystery clients (MC) visit to compare: • Counseling provided by NFP in intervention area and • Counseling provided by NFP in control area
Results • MC received friendly attitudes from NFP (intervention 83% vs. control 45%) • NFPs in intervention area were more likely to ask questions about the MC’s medical history Counseling advice by NFP
Conclusion Key messages: • NFP who received detailing by MR on STI counseling can provide better STI services Limitations: • Purposive selection of study sites • The mystery client’s visits were conducted soon after the dissemination of the guidelines Recommendations • The ability of MRs to disseminate health information to health providers should be used as a potential resource • A larger scale impact assessment is needed to understand the impact of the approach better
