Reading Test Design for 2010 Grades 3 thru 8 • Paired reading selections Text 1 (8 MC items) Text 2 (8 MC items) Text 1 & 2 (6 cross-text MC items) • Independent reading selection Text 3 (8 MC items + 1 short answer CR item worth 3 points) Total: 33 points
Short Answer Constructed Response • Purpose: Another way for students to show understanding • Could assess any of the GLCEs • Scored for comprehension • Scored using customized 3-point rubric
Sample Questions (2007) Grade 5: All About Alligators • List three locations in which alligators can be found. • Describe alligators using three details from the selection. • Explain why alligators can be dangerous using three details from the selection. Sample Rubric (List) A 3- point response provides three text-based locations in which alligators can be found A 2-point response provides two text-based locations in which alligators can be found A 1-point response provides one text-based location in which an alligator could be found. A 0-point response receives a Condition Code: A = Off-topic; B = Illegible or written in language other than English; C = Blank; D = Insufficient to rate; E = Incorrect answer

Schedule • Need to field test during operational testing window • Two days needed to complete assessment - Day 1 on Tuesday, October 12 - Day 2 on Wednesday, October 13
Tips • Become familiar with “Released Items” from website • 2005 and 2006 released 100% of items • 2007 and 2008 released Independent Reading items • 2009 and on, not releasing any items (Item Descriptors) • For CR items, impress upon students importance of answering question that was asked • Don’t “drill and kill” just before the test
