A lie requires a person or group of people who will hear the lie and be tempted to believe the lie. 1. An idol is anything that is worshipped in the place of God. 2. An idol is a material possession in which a worshipper finds a false sense of security.

  3. The Lie of Idolatry 1. The Idol-Maker, the Idol and the Idolater (Isaiah 44:9) 2. The Idol-Maker and His Factory (Isaiah 44:10-17) 3. The Lie (Isaiah 44:18-20)

  4. DISCUSSION GUIDE 1. What does Isaiah say about those who make idols, the idols they make and those who worship them? (Isaiah 44:9) Isaiah says that those who make idols are nothing, the idols they make are worthless and those who worship the idols are blind and ignorant.

  5. DISCUSSION GUIDE 2. How would you define “idol?”

  6. DISCUSSION GUIDE 3. What rhetorical question does Isaiah ask about those who make idols? (Isaiah 44:10) Why would anyone waste their time making something that is worthless?

  7. DISCUSSION GUIDE 4. How would you answer Isaiah’s question? What are some idols that people make for themselves?

  8. DISCUSSION GUIDE 5. What does Isaiah say about the person who makes idols? (Isaiah 44:11) Isaiah says that those who craft idols will be put to shame.

  9. DISCUSSION GUIDE 6. What happens to the blacksmith as he shapes an idol? (Isaiah 44:12) As a blacksmith creates an idol he gets hungry and loses his strength; he does not drink enough water and faints.

  10. DISCUSSION GUIDE 7. Why is this statement significant?

  11. DISCUSSION GUIDE 8. Where does a carpenter get the idea for what his idol will look like? Where do the materials come from? (Isaiah 44:13-14) The carpenter creates the idol in his own image. The material to make the idol comes from the forest and is a created thing.

  12. DISCUSSION GUIDE • 9. For what three purposes does the carpenter use wood from the forest? (Isaiah 44:15-17) • The carpenter uses wood: • To cook his meals • As fuel to keep his home warm • To create a god that he can worship

  13. DISCUSSION GUIDE 10. In what way does Isaiah poke fun at the carpenter who creates idols? (Isaiah 44:19) Isaiah puts these words in the mouth of the carpenter; “I’ve used part of my lumber to cook food and part of it to keep myself warm. What shall I do with the rest? I know! I’ll make a god to worship!”

  14. DISCUSSION GUIDE 11. Isaiah says that this man “feeds on ashes.” How is this significant? (Isaiah 44:20)

  15. DISCUSSION GUIDE 12. How does Isaiah characterize the state of this man’s soul? (Isaiah 44:20) Isaiah says that the man’s own heart is deluded and misleads him. He cannot save himself because the one he looks to for security is something that he, himself, fashioned from a block of wood. He cannot even recognize that his god is a lie.
