What is Health and Medicine? Health and medicine are the fields responsible for the practice, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases. Health is the state of complete physical well- being. Medicine is the broader category, consisting of deeper understanding of the human body, how different organs work, what causes these diseases, how to prevent them and how to treat them. Health and medicine are broad career fields, with dozens of sub-fields. Admission-What are the Entry Requirements? Admission into medical school varies a lot from pursuing a course in health sciences. With the former, the entry education requirements are much higher and tougher. The latter is more lenient with grades, but nonetheless, you must have passed in your high school studies. Below is a breakdown of the main entry requirements in the UK, US and most parts of Europe. In Europe High school certificate, with at least 75% pass grade in most health degrees. Record straight A’s in Math, Biology and Chemistry. A minimum of 6.0 scores for IELTS and TOEFL results. In the UK Score 500 in each UK clinical aptitude test. Pass the GCSE with straight A’s in at least five subjects, including, biology, chemistry and math. International Baccalaureate students must have 36 points overall. In the US High school diploma. An undergraduate degree in health sciences for students who wish to pursue medicine. You must also have reached a 3.0 point grade. Pass TOEFL language tests. Complete MCAT (Association of American Medical colleges) tests. Duration of Study For many health degrees, the duration of study is 3 to 4 years. For medicine, students stay between 7 and 9 years depending on specialization and institution. The first four years are treated as the foundation of medical studies, where students learn the foundation of medicine and health issues. After the fourth year, medicine students are allowed to pursue an area of specialization, which takes another 3 to 5 years.
