Flax fibre processing Flax straw Shive Fibre Dust • What part of straw should be good as reinforcement for biocomposites??? • What should be the cost-effectiveness for each straw product???

PP-Flax biocompositesEffect of cellulose type • Flax shive, fibre, dust and chopped straw all can be used as reinforcements for PP • Flax fibre is the most effective reinforcement Should study the appropriate fibre processing method to be used for a specific market rather than one approach to fit all!
PP-Flax biocompositesFormulation-Additive • IMI’s invention: CaO improves further both tensile strength and modulus
PP-FlaxbiocompositeFormulation-Coupling agent 30wt% flax fibre in PP The new coupling agents provide superior mechanical properties for the biocomposites as compare to conventional coupling agent PB3150 & E43
PP-Flaxbiocomposites Recyclingability • The biocomposites have very good recycling ability • Recycling ability should be considered as one of the most importants elements in the bioproduct development
PLA-FlaxbiocompositeEffect of straw content • Chopped flax straw enhances well the PLA modulus but not strength • Modulus improves significantly with the increase of straw content
PLA-FlaxbiocompositeEffect of PLA type • Chopped flax straw enhances well the PLAs’ stiffness but reduced the strength: behaves like low density filler!!!
PLA-FlaxBiocompositeFormulation • Flax fibre enhances well the PLA strength and modulus • IMI’s formulation improves significantly the composite properties With the IMI’s developped formulation flax fibre has been upgraded to be a good reinforcement for the PLA composites
Biocomposite formulations PLA-Flax Conventional formulation: not very good interface
Biocomposite formulations PLA-Flax IMI’s formulation: great improvement at interface
Recyclingability PLA-Flax The 100% biocomposites have a good recycling ability
Conclusions • Products from flax straw can be good reinforcements for the production of thermoplastic biocomposites if the right formulation and processing conditions are used • Flax dust and shives can be aimed for lost cost products while flax fibres can be used for good performance products but the protection from damage in fibre structure and in fibre length must be fully considered in the whole process • Flax fibre form should be carefully designed for specific application: short fibre versus long fibre, matt and fabric • Reflection: recycling ability must be included in the development of bioplastics and biocomposites • Recyclable vs Biodegradable • Recyclable vs Renewable
Flax fibre vs man-made fibre Flax fibre Man-made fibre
Flax fibre vs man-made fibre • Flax fibre has certain irregularity and deffects • Please try to avoid hurting further the fibres during straw processing
