A very good form of communication. • A powerful and deadly tool!

GET THE FACTS • 2009 5,454 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers and an estimated 448,000 were injured • 2009 16% of FATAL crashes involved distracted driving. 20% of INJURIES involved distracted driving. • June 2011= 196 BILLION Text messages were sent or received in the US=50% increase from June 2009. • TEEN DRIVERS are most likely than any other age group to be involved in a FATAL crash when distracted driving was involved. • 40% all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in some way.

GET THE FACTS • Text messaging creates a crash risk 23X greater than driving undistracted. • Any use of a cell phone when driving delays a drivers reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08%. • Driving while using a cell phone REDUCES the amount of BRAIN ACTIVITY associated w/driving by 37%. • These are not the facts for 2012..How do you think the increase of crashes involving death or injury has impacted the lives of the people in the USA recently?

Statistics • NJ State Police reported that 24 people were killed in accidents blamed on cell phone related crashes between 2008-2009 • 225,000 tickets were issued between that time and 5,500 accidents were related to cell phone usage between 2009 and 2010 • Police reported an 18% increase in collision fatalities in 2011’s first quarter
