Purpose • MTI offers selected classes to high school students at High Plains Technical Academy • Provide basic skills and knowledge facilitating the transition to energy related programs at Mitchell Technical Institute • Introduction of energy related training at the high school level leads to more post-secondary students and ultimately more energy workers in South Dakota • Conduct pilot program during SY 2009-10 through HPTS with 18 high school students
Concept • Hybrid classes with daily online lessons • Once/month on-site labs at Mitchell Technical Institute with face-to-face, hands-on activities • Provide foundational technical courses & MTI general education classes • Provide pathway to various MTI Energy Programs including: • Heating and Cooling Technologies • Power Line Construction & Maintenance • Propane & Natural Gas • Wind Turbine Technology
Concept • MTI provides loaner books if needed • Students earn MTI credit (12 credits) • District approves for dual-credit
Energy Essentials Course • Energy Essentials • Provides an introduction to the many opportunities within the Energy Career Field • Provides a foundation for continued post-secondary training • Include elements from several MTI Energy related programs including: Propane and Natural Gas (PNG), Power Line Construction & Maintenance (PL), Heating and Cooling Technology (HCT) and Wind Turbine Technology (WTT)
Microcomputer Apps Course • Provides foundational computer application skills needed for future schooling and workplace • Provides general education requirement for all MTI Energy programs • Daily online lessons and activities • On-site lab activities 1/month at MTI
Electrical Essentials Course Design • Components of existing MTI electrical courses • Provide basic principles and theories of direct and alternating current • Study basic electrical components of various energy related programs at MTI • Daily online delivered content • On-site lab activities 1/month at MTI
Technical Writing • Provides general education requirement for all MTI Energy programs • Daily online lessons and content • On site activities 1/month at MTI • Provides alternative for high school English requirement
Follow-up • Complete student registrations • MTI provide class start-up instructions to schools in August • Conduct student orientation and initial activities at MTI – tentatively August 27 or 28 • Determine schedule for monthly face-to-face lab activities
