Statement of Purpose • To learn to conduct myself in a more professional manner • To gain hands on experience while working in a mental health institution • To learn to apply the theories and techniques discussed in class in a realistic working environment • Co-lead two social skills groups for kids • To further educate myself on social dysfunction and other abnormal psychological issues
Population • I helped co-lead two social skills groups for kid ranging in age between 9 and 15 years of age. • Tuesday: three kids; 1 girl and 2 boys • Wednesday: four kids; 0 girls and 4 boys • I observed testing of kids with learning disabilities who were both 17 years old, one in their senior year and one in their freshman year of high school. • Interaction with parents was limited but important for feedback purposes and goal setting • Interaction with other Mind Matters staff was a daily occurrence. The staff ranges from office managers, licensed professional therapist with masters degrees to doctoral degrees, tutors, and secretaries.
My Duties • Tuesday 3:30pm-4:30pm Group 1 • Wednesday 5:30pm-6:30pm Group 2 • Each class involved about 30 minutes preparation time for the group meeting as well as a 15 minutes discussion time after the group with Dr. Crook. • Multiple hours spent on any time schedule was spent researching on topics related to the social skills groups and the specific needs that the kids had. (eg: ADHD, Asbergers, non- verbal learning disability, etc.)
My Duties • Other hours spent on: • getting folders together for the kids with appropriate paper work for the groups • typing up homework • setting up video equipment • Researching background information on each child’s past diagnosis • Making phone calls to parents • Socializing and building team cohesion with other members of the staff
My Duties • Sit in on parent individual counseling sessions • Give feedback to Dr. Crook on a regular basis about where the group should be heading and what changes have been made and should be made. • Discussion with office manager about appropriate office politics and insurance billing systems
Recommendations • Anyone who is comfortable being a leader and is looking to fine tune their leaderships skills. • Must be comfortable in group and individual settings • Must be assertive and a team player • Must be able to receive feedback from others and give feedback to others, both negative and positive in nature • Anyone who works well with a flexible schedule and can work at making their own times
