Interoperability standards - the I-VLab GroupMartin Zelm, CIMOSA Associationmartin.zelm@cimosa.de INTEROP-Vlab General Assembly Brussels, May 20, 2010
Agenda • Objective • I-VLab Contributions to Standardisation • EI Framework CEN/ISO 11354 • EI specifications in the OMG • FInES Standards Taskforce • I-ESA 2010 Standards Workshop • Planned Activities • Outlook
Create awareness of VLab standardisation efforts and related work in standards organisations, via Coordinateparticipation in working groups of standards organisations PromoteEI standardisation results via workshops and conferences Cooperate with R&D Projects and EI initiatives Resources: An expert group composed of members of the I-VLab Poles Objectives
EI Standards …in development or implementation with I-VLab contributions (Poles) • CEN/ISO 11354-1 Framework for Manufacturing Enterprise Interoperability, status DIS (active: DFI, PGSO) • OMG: EI Specifications: UML Profile, Metamodel for and Value of Services (active:NorthPole) • Standards implementation in SME-based environments, • ISO 10303, AP236: Furniture product data exchange, funStep (active: Spanish Pole) • SME Networks in Textile/Clothing Industry, ebXML, UBL.. (active: Italian Pole)
CEN/ISO 11354: Requirements for establishing manufacturing enterprise process interoperability • Part1: Framework for Interoperability • Part 2: Requirements for ICT-based enterprise interoperability Source CEN/ISO 11354-1
FInES Standardisation Task Force Content of the Final Report Authors A. Dogac, S Pattendon, M.Zelm, September 2009) • Standardisation Objectives • Cloud Computing • GS1 and IoT • Semantic Interoperability of Business Documents • Semantic Enterprise Interoperability, Frameworks, Standards • Analysis of work and requirements for Future User Oriented Standards in FInES (B2B, B2C, B2A Services) • Conformance and Interoperability Testing of Standards • Conclusion: Need correspondence between RTD and standardisation
Actions 2010 ….with focus on EI standards • I-ESA 2010 Conference, Workshop Standards - a foundation for interoperability • Six papers from experts inside and outside of I-VLab • Leading to collaboration with other projects • Innovation Event Berlin, workshop on EI and standards (Sept 2010) • Cooperation project ?
I-ESA 2010 Workshop: Standards – a foundation for interoperability (1) Papers: • Standards for Enterprise Interoperation – how to improve?Martin Zelm and Kurt Kosanke, CIMOSA Assciation • Framework for Enterprise Interoperability and Maturity Model (CEN/ISO 11354), David Chen University of Bordeaux • Testing Interoperability Standards - a Test Case Generation Methodology,Nenad Ivezic and Jungyub Woo, NIST • OMG Specifications for Enterprise Interoperability, Brian Elvesaeter and Arne Berre, SINTEF • Standards creation and adoption for SME networks – the experience of the European Textile-Clothing and Footwear Industry, Piero de Sabbata et al, ENEA • The European Public Procurement Initiative and Standards for Information Exchange, Tim McGrath, Document Engineering Services
I-ESA 2010 Workshop: Standards – a foundation for interoperability (2) • The standards development process of formal SDOs must receive full support from both the National governments and from the European Union organisations to become more effective. Otherwise results obtained in R&D projects are lost after the project completion. • Universities must strengthen their active involvement in research and development of standards. A strong collaboration between research and standardisation organisation, is recommended that should be supported by information dissemination and results demonstration efforts to increase public awareness and acceptance of both R&D and standardisation results. • The development of open, application oriented EI standards in industry consortia (as OMG or OASIS), runs faster and with strong involvement from all stakeholders involved. However, governance of the implementation is limited to those involved, hence, such standards lack global acceptance. • SME collaboration networks prefer sector specific standards. This should be reflected in the classification of standards, as well as types of horizontal and vertical standards. The implementation of standards in SMEs networks is still in an early phase and is often not complying with the specifications
Standards Development Issues • For academia, standardisation seems to only be of interest if it is part of a research project and is required by the scope of the project • For industry, a strong business case must exist • High membership fees in SDOs and cost of standards documents (ISO, OMG…) • Needs for promoting EI standards: • I-VLab to create more visibility of user benefits and increase active cooperation • Funding of activities to be resolved (at least meetings, travel)
Outlook • Standardisation for Enterprise Interoperability (EI) is in progress in CEN/ ISO, and elsewhere but not yet applicable at the operational level • I-VLab provides opportunities on • EI Standards development and awareness • On industry use of standards through guidance on standards and application • Collaboration in EI standardisation • No sufficient funding of activities in place
