  2. Purpose • To identify what the counseling department is doing to prepare students for college • To identify what parents must do to prepare students for college • To identify what students must do to prepare themselves for college

  3. There is a college for everyone! It is NOT critical for a high school student to know what his life career is going to be! Planning and research are critical tools in developing knowledge of the type of school which will be a good match for the student and his parents! 4 year, 2 year, special interest, part time, full time People change careers at least 5 times , 60% change majors Location, size, cost, reputation, environment, range of majors, social, Ivy’s vs. 5,000 other schools Key concepts

What the counseling department is doing • Professional relationships with admissions personnel • Meetings/counseling with students and parents • Review of GPA, SAT, ACT, activities, community service, leadership, employment, etc. • Encourage on-going communication between parent and student • Encourage college visitations • Unofficial transcript for each student *

  5. What the counseling department is doing • NCAA - Rules and regulations for athletes, forms and process • Financial Aid - FAFSA • Financial Aid scams • Counseling Department Scholarship Newsletter and web-site

What the counseling department is doingNAVIANCE • Naviance helps students plan for and achieve their post-secondary goals • With Naviance, a student can: Create a career interest profile Build a resume Design his/her own college plans Research and compare colleges to form a college list View BGA college acceptance status View virtual tours of colleges • The Naviance link is posted on our school’s website, allowing students to access the information at home

Career Education - 10th grade Interest and aptitude inventories Work shadowing Speakers Biographical sketches Personal finance and budgeting On-line software (Naviance) Career Education - 11th grade College Portfolio - Naviance -Resume -College essays -2nd Biographical sketches -College criteria - College list College mock interview College speakers College fair Research on scholarships and financial aid College first year adjustments What the counseling department is doing

What the counseling department is doing • Reviewing college applications • College fairs • Resource materials -books, web-sites (college information and applications, state and federal financial aid sources) • September, October & November – Colleges come to visit and have meetings with interested students. (sign-up)

What the parents need to do • Review Career Education information • Talk, LISTEN, talk, LISTEN, talk, LISTEN… • Review Career Education portfolio • Review GPA and SAT score requirements for each college the student is interested in • Cost - including transportation, fees, books, room and board and other expenses not immediately obvious • Talk to your child about affordability, and cost of college

  10. What the parents need to do • Plan visits to several colleges in a given area and encourage child to take advantage of open house invitations • Keep up with important dates -testing, scholarships, etc. • Talk to your child’s counselor

What the student needs to do • Take school seriously • Study and complete assignments on time • Keep up with activities and service • Talk to parents about location, size, major, college activities, etc. • Talk to teachers and counselors • Use web-sites and other resources materials • Talk to parents about cost

What the student needs to do • Keep up with important dates for testing • Review scholarship newsletters • Complete resume, college essay and ask teachers for recommendations • Visit schools and attend open house programs • Weed extraneous mail from colleges • Deadlines!
