  1. Legendoftheprincessburial On May 12 1490, as the coffin was transported from the “Casa de Lavor” the cloister a strange thing happened: all the flowers died and all the leaves and flowers fell from the trees. Soon, news of this miracle spread throughout the Village and the kingdom.

  2. Legend of the princess burial Princess Joana kindness and some stories people told about extraordinary things that happened after her death, quickly led to be known as a saint.

  3. Princess Joana andthecomet’slegend When the Princess Joana, in 1472, came to Aveiro there was a uproar related to the appearance of a comet, which became visible at this time. According to testimony of the nuns of the Convent of Jesus, during the month of March, at night, a great comet appeared and even with a clouded sky it was visible and bright, and remained so until dawn.

  4. Princess Joana andthecomet’slegend • Everyone was amazed and saw it as as a miraculous sign. • When it suddenly disappeared, the people understood cause and reason for such clear evidence: the arrival of the Princess. Once the princess entered the town of Aveiro, the comet was never seen. • This testimony given by the nuns seems a little bit overstated to the period of its visibility, because it extends from March to August.

  5. Princess Joana andthecomet’slegend • In “Chronology of Comets” there is a reference to two comets in 1472: one in January, another in March, observed by Paulo del Pozzo Toscanelli. • It was probably the Halley comet. • However it will be forever related to the legend of Saint Joana and its entry into the Convent of Jesus of Aveiro.

  6. S. Simão protector oftheConvent • The town of Aveiro was, in 1526, haunted by a plague. The convent was at the time led by Prioress, D. Isabel de Castro.

  7. S. Simão protector oftheConvent • The foundation of the convent was recent and therefore, a saint protector had not yet been chosen. Fearing the plague, the nuns had to chose one saint: diving a candle in 12 equal parts, they made 12 “candeias”, offering them to each of the twelve apostles.

  8. S. Simão protector oftheConvent The one who lasted longer would stand for the chosen saint. St. Simon was therefore selected as the convent patron and the Prioress, on behalf of all nuns, promised to make every year a feast and a procession and to build him a chapel.

  9. S. Simão protector oftheConvent From that day on, on the day of the celebration, St. Simon cakes or breads are given to all.
