  1. The use of Repertory in modern day to day practice Presentation by Dr D P Rastogi

  2. Hahnemann used about 200 remedies in his practice. • In the Synthesis repertory a catalogue of 3712 remedies has been drawn up • It was not possible to match the symptoms of the patient with the symptoms of the remedies even for Hahnemann although the number of remedies then was too small , and therefore he himself made a repertory and used in his practice.

  3. So it is the explosion of the Materia Medica data which gave birth to the Repertory • Repertory is nothing but the arrangement of vast symptoms of drugs in a retrievable manner • Repertory saves us lot of time and bring before us many remedies with which we are not familiar with

  4. Repertory is not a rival to the existence of Materia Medica and there is no question of either and or between Materia medica and Repertory • Both are necessary • Repertory is always regarded as a tool • After we repertorize , we should go back to the Materia Medica

  5. Thus the role of Repertory is always to suggest but Materia Medica plays a decisive role in each case • It may be worthwhile recalling that Dr T F Allen could not comprehend Materia Medica Pura even after studying it for 11 years. So he turned back to Therapeutic Pocket Book of Boenninghausen which enabled him to use it

  6. There are many who do not realize the need of Repertory and consider Materia Medica as sufficient for their purpose • But how many remedies from the Materia Medica do we remember?

  7. Desire for Salt in a patient immediately brings to our mind Nat mur • But do we know that Arg nit, Calccarb, Cal phos, Carb veg, Caust, Con, Cor r, MEPH, NAT MUR, Nit ac. , Phos, thuja, Ver-a all have it

  8. Ailments from grief or sorrow immediately brings to mind Ignatia • But there are a large number of remedies including AUR , PHOS ACID , STAPH , Cal carb, Caust , Coloc , Graph, Hell , Hyos , Lyc, Nat-mur,Sepia and lot more. • Do we remember even some of them ? And do we remember “can not weep “ nux v ?

  9. The role of repertory is to bring about all the remedies for a particular symptom to our consideration • In the present day practice we have to deal with a large number of cases having complex problems seeking immediate solution • Referring to even one or two main important symptoms gives us some remedies which we can differentiate to arrive at the most similar.

  10. Examples • A patient presented blepharospasm of both eyes which could not be helped with the best of allopathic treatment. The patient also had photophobia. The case was repertorized in Knerr’s repertory where Euphrasia was suggested as the only remedy under Lids- spasms with photophobia. The case was cured with Euphrasia.

  11. A patient complained lot of nasal discharge while eating . He had to get up to clear the nose several times during his meal. This was most embarrassing. This peculiar symptom was looked in Murphy’s repertory and found under Nose discharge eating ,while. Trombidium was prominently mentioned along with carb an, clem, nux vom, plb, sanic and sulphur . As the patient also had pain in the lower abdomen Trombidium was given which immediately relieved.

  12. A young lady came to consult for genital warts which were itching a lot. All investigations including one for HIV were negative. Finding no clue I looked up Knerr’s repertory.I found under the chapter Genitalia the rubric warts-itch and the only drug given was Sabina. This was given and in 15 days report was that most of the warts have fallen.

  13. Nose blocked Agg. Cold, wet weather Agg. Noise Anger Head pounding Mucus in throat Vertigo , when rising from bed Zygomae Neuralgic pain What remedies come to your mind ? A case of sinusitis

  14. Paralysis of deglutition Regurgitation through nose Swallowing difficult Voice nasal Respiration difficult Agg. during sleep Emaciation Snoring What remedy do you think ? A case of Diphtheritic bulbar paralysis

  15. Covulsions Agg. Sleep Agg. Left side Face, dark, husky Loquacity Agg. New moon Upward directions of symptoms Shocks, thrusts Aura, left extremity What is the remedy? Convulsion Work out of the case in BBR All the rubrics were found in BBR and Cuprum emerged as the highest scorer which cured the case

  16. Rheumatic endocarditis treated by Dr Kent • Rheumatic metastasis to heart • Agg.rest • Amel. Open air • Craves meat • Hungry , very What is the remedy “

  17. Conclusion As we have seen in the above cases, we could not come to one remedy from our knowledge of Materia Medica. However, working out the cases with repertory we got the idea of the remedy which cured. Thus repertory is an important tool in modern day to day practice.
