MATH LABS IN THE COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT A Report By Frank Monterisi Jr. Appalachian State University Graduate Student
Table of Contents • Overview • Goals • Procedures • Findings & Results • Conclusion & Questions
Project Overview • Does the Math Lab help “at-risk” students pass? • Test scores, and final numerical and letter grades ; analyzed • Visits and length have been recorded and analyzed.
Project Goals • “At-Risk” Students who attend Math Lab pass more than “at-risk” students who don’t. • Obtain Feedback to be used for improvements. • Compare/Contrast different Math Labs • What are other institutions doing for their “at-risk” students.
Definition AT RISK STUDENT: One who achieved an average of 75% or below on the first 2 exams. JUSTIFICATION???
Procedure • Which group of students to study? • Get IRB Review Exemption • Organize a plan of attack • Talk to the students in the MAT 1020 Classes • Begin to collect data • Sit back and wait • Collect and Analyze all Data
What is a Math Lab? The Math Lab at ASU can be described as a free, walk-in help center where peer tutors are available to answer questions relating to assignments and projects given by faculty. • Characteristics of Successful Math Labs • Guidelines for Mathematics Departments at Two-Year Colleges • Crossroads in Mathematics: Standards for Introductory College Mathematics Before Calculus • Free • Good Proximity to Math Dept. • High student and faculty presence • Available Resources • Open and available to maximize use • State of the Art Facilities.
Findings and Results 81 TOTAL STUDENTS 42 MALES 39 FEMALES Fifteen 18 – yr olds Twenty 19 – yr Olds Twenty – Six 18 – yr Olds Thirteen 19 – yr Olds Seven 20 – yr Olds
Survey Question 3
Survey ( Continued ) Question 4
Correlation? Time in Hours Spent in Math Lab VS Final Numerical Grade
Median Score : 69.95 (ML AR) Median Score : 72.50 (NML AR)
What to do? Attending Math Lab and passing MAT 1020 are independent of each other. There is an association between the two. We would use a Chi-Squared Test of Independence OR Fisher’s Exact Test
Tests • Chi-Squared Test of Independence • Sample Sizes were not fixed; Uncontrolled • The Chi-Squared test for independence is used to test the relationship between two variables of a sample. • Fisher’s Exact Test • Fisher's exact test is a statistical test used to determine if there are nonrandom associations between two categorical variables.
Conclusions • Hypothesis Tests Unnecessary • Medians Contradict Hypothesis (Mann-Whitney Test) • No Conclusion Can Be Made • Future Implications???
