Nanotechnology Chicago State University SUMMER 2013
Marcus Taylor Nanotechnology Nanotechnology is the study of matter that is 10 to the negative 9 power. Nanotechnology consist of tools such as AFM (atomic force microscope), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), and many more. The word STEM means Science Technology Engineering and Math. I have learned also learned a lot of things like Nanofabric which is in stain resistant clothing, nanoparticles such as pieces of cds and how dense they are. Did you also know that the paint on all recent Mercedes-benz cars is called nano paint. This paint is dirt resisting, water resisting, and chip resistant.
Nasir “We learned about Scale” • 1 strand of hair is 100, 000nm wide • If 1nm were 5 inches, then one strand of hair would be 8 miles wide. Chicago Skyline Using the telescopes we built, we were able to see all the way to downtown Chicago from the Sunroom Terrace in the New Academic Library
Bernard Winston Digital Microscope We hooked up digital microscopes to the computer and look at smaller objects we couldn't see with our eye, because the objects are smaller than the wave lenth of visible light (which is 400 800 nano-meters. We looked at the materials we took from outside. Also we looked at the threads in our clothes and different things such as hair and skin. it enhances the view so you could see things far more clearer than you could believe.
Elijah Hunt William Science Center
Brian Walker William Science Center (WSC) named after Dr. Daniel Hale Williams (January 18, 1858 – August 4, 1931), the first African-American cardiologist, who performed the 1st successful open heart surgery in the United States at Provident Hospital. Provident Hospital, the first Black-owned and operated hospital in America, was established in Chicago in 1891 by Dr. Williams. This was the first non-segregated hospital in the United States and it provided service to residents of Chicago's south side. It is now known as Provident Hospital of Cook County.
Rashea’ Smith Do you know what the letter Ph.D. mean? The first black to receive a Ph.D. in chemistry was St. Elmo Brady who earned doctorate a in chemistry from the University of Illinois in Champagne Urbana in 1916.
Terry Dyson We visited Harold Washington Hall. Harold Washington was the 1st Black Mayor of the City of Chicago. He held office from April 29, 1983 to November 25, 1987. At Chicago State, the departments of Pre-Engineering, Music, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Psychology are in Harold Washington Hall.

Light travels as waves of energy. Waves of light have different wavelengths (the distance between the top of one wave and the top of the next). Different colors of light have different wavelengths. Purple and blue light waves have short wavelengths. Red light has a longer wavelength. This picture shows the lengths of the waves of different colors of light. The longest red waves are about 700 nanometers long. The shortest purple waves are 400 nanometers long. Light waves with short wavelengths carry more energy than ones with long wavelengths. "Light" waves shorter than 400 nm are called "ultraviolet" or "UV" light. "Light" waves longer than 700 nm are called "infrared" or "IR" light. Some people use a distance unit called an Ångström to measure light waves. There are 10 Ångströms in one nanometer. Green light has a wavelength of 5,500 Ångströms, which is the same as 550 nanometers. EmilyGuerrero Smaller than the Wavelength light

Chicago State has the Automated Storage and Retrival System called ROVER (Retrieval Online Via Electronic Robot. This means that students can make a request for a book from anywhere in the world with out the asisstants of a libraian. In fact, many science and engenering students use this serves to help them obtain refrences for their papers. The ROVER can retreive a book in lease than 2 minutes. Also Chicago State is the first school in the state of illinios to have this system.
